Eligibility Criteria
Who can apply:

• Citizens or residents of an African country, including refugees and displaced persons

• Aged 35 years or below at the time of programme start

• Hold a good undergraduate degree (UK 2:1 or equivalent) suitable for postgraduate research

• Affiliated with or graduated from one of the approved African partner universities

• Demonstrated interest in sustainability, African futures, or development-related research

• Ability to meet English language requirements (support may be available)

The Masters by Research in Sustainable African Futures Scholarship 2026 is a prestigious, fully funded postgraduate research programme designed to equip emerging African scholars with advanced research skills to address sustainability challenges on the African continent.

The programme is delivered through a unique partnership between the University of Edinburgh and Wits University, combining high-quality online learning with in-person sustainability schools in Johannesburg.

The scholarship aims to nurture the next generation of African researchers, policy thinkers, and academic leaders committed to inclusive, sustainable, and future-focused development in Africa.

Funding / Coverage
Fully Funded Scholarship

The scholarship typically covers:
• Full MSc by Research tuition fees
• Participation in two fully funded in-person sustainability schools in Johannesburg
• Travel costs, accommodation, subsistence, and visa support for in-person sessions
• Laptop and internet connectivity support (where required)
• Access to University of Edinburgh online libraries and academic resources
• Research and academic skills development support
