Eligibility Criteria

Who can apply:

*Nationals of selected Global South countries

*Early-stage PhD candidates (minimum 36 months of research remaining by 1 Oct 2026)

*Applicants pursuing a (joint) PhD degree at Ghent University

*Joint application required with:

*A Ghent University supervisor

*A local supervisor in the Global South

*Research relevant to North–South development context preferred

*Female researchers are strongly encouraged to apply

*Exchange students are not eligible

Ghent University offers prestigious Sandwich PhD scholarships for talented researchers from Global South (developing) countries. The program allows candidates to split their PhD research between Ghent University (Belgium) and their home institution, under joint supervision, ensuring global research excellence with strong local impact.

A 4-year Sandwich PhD program where Ghent University funds 24 months of research in Belgium, while the remaining 24 months are funded locally in the candidate’s home country.

Funding / Coverage

What’s covered:

*Monthly stipend of ~€2,550 during 24 months at Ghent University

*€310/month bench fee for research costs

*€8,000 travel budget (student + supervisors)

*Access to world-class labs, research facilities, and global academic networks

Co-funding is mandatory for the 24 months spent in the Global South.
