Eligibility Criteria
Who can apply:
• Applicants must apply for (or already hold an offer to) the MPhil/PhD in Anthropology & Sociology at SOAS.

• Strong academic background in Anthropology or a closely related field (normally a Master’s with at least 65% overall and 65% in the dissertation).

• Research proposal must use anthropological and ethnographic methods to explore mental health.
• Open to UK and international students.

• Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds and those with lived experience of mental health issues are strongly encouraged to apply.

• Must meet SOAS English language requirements (for non-native speakers).

The CAMHRA Doctoral Scholarships 2026 at SOAS University of London support exceptional PhD candidates conducting research in anthropological approaches to mental health.

These fully funded scholarships aim to advance critical, ethnographic, and socially engaged research into global mental health, wellbeing, and healing practices. The awards are hosted within the Department of Anthropology and Sociology and align with CAMHRA’s mission to deepen understanding of lived experience, care, and cultural context in mental health.

Scholars will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary academic community, gaining access to supervision, research networks, and training in the heart of London.

Funding / Coverage
Scholars receive:
• Full tuition fee coverage (Home or Overseas rate).

• Annual living stipend (approx. £22,780 per year for three years, full-time).

• Research support and training through CAMHRA.
